Briefing to Mr S Iswaran, Minister for Communications and Information on Surbana Jurong’s partnership with AI Singapore and SMU to enhance predictive lift maintenance system.
Singapore, 30 August 2018 – Surbana Jurong, one of the largest Asia-based urban and infrastructure consulting firms, will partner AI Singapore and Singapore Management University (SMU), to further enhance its predictive lift maintenance system. This was announced at AI Singapore’s 100 Experiments Showcase event held today.
Surbana Jurong’s Lift Maintenance System (LMS) currently supports Town Councils in monitoring 25,000 lifts across 10,000 public housing blocks in Singapore. LMS collects data on the lifts’ performance and uses predictive analytics to identify potential issues before they occur and in turn, reduce lifts’ maintenance downtime.
The partnership aims to leverage advancements in Artificial Intelligence to enhance LMS’ predictive analytics capabilities. Surbana Jurong will provide data collected from its lift monitoring devices to the AI apprentices from AI Singapore for their analysis, under mentorship of SMU’s professors. SMU will also work closely with Surbana Jurong to conduct research and development to enhance its current LMS. This ensures that the developed solutions can be implemented quickly for immediate impact.
This partnership leverages Surbana Jurong’s experience of over 30 years in monitoring the lifts in Singapore’s public housing estates and the partners’ experience and capabilities in research and Artificial Intelligence. The project will be over an 18-month period.

The SJ-NTU Corporate Lab was launched yesterday as a collaboration between Surbana Jurong, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) and National Research Foundation Singapore (NRF). The laboratory, sited at NTU, will develop next-generation sustainable solutions to tackle industrial and complex urban challenges.
Its key objectives are to translate research outcomes into practical and viable solutions based on three core themes: digitalisation; green and sustainable urban solutions; and future of the industry and productivity.
The S$61-million joint corporate lab is underlined by a five-year partnership, which leverages NTU’s strengths in engineering and sustainability research, and Surbana Jurong’s track record in providing urban, infrastructure and industrial solutions to its global customers.

Singapore, 31 July 2018 – Surbana Jurong, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) and the National Research Foundation Singapore (NRF) have set up a joint corporate laboratory to develop next-generation sustainable solutions to tackle industrial and complex urban challenges.
It will include research to explore underground storage systems, sustainable indoor solutions for buildings, and digital technologies to scale up productivity in the built environment.
The $61 million joint corporate lab is underlined by a five-year partnership, which leverages NTU’s strengths in engineering and sustainability research, and Surbana Jurong’s track record in providing urban, infrastructure and industrial solutions to its global customers.
Located at NTU, the SJ-NTU Corporate Lab was officially launched today by Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister for National Development and Second Minister for Finance.
The NRF facilitates the setting up of corporate labs via public-private partnerships. The SJ-NTU Corporate Lab is the 12th supported by NRF and the sixth such corporate lab at NTU.
NTU President Professor Subra Suresh said, “The current dramatic shift to a digital and sustainable economy requires societies to push the boundaries of urban and industrial innovation, and develop new technologies that balance the built and natural environments.
“The innovations developed at the SJ-NTU Corporate Lab will be tested on NTU’s Smart Campus, which is already pioneering the use of green construction technologies and is a testbed for innovations from autonomous electric vehicles to smart buildings and various applications of artificial intelligence.”

Championing sustainable solutions for the urban environment
The key objectives of the SJ-NTU Corporate Lab will be to translate research outcomes into practical and viable solutions that are focused around three core themes: digitalisation; green and sustainable urban solutions; and future of the industry and productivity.
Professor Lam Khin Yong, NTU’s Vice President for Research said, “The three key areas of research in the corporate lab draw on the strengths of NTU and Surbana Jurong as we both have expertise in engineering and in the translation of research into practical industry applications. With five recent corporate labs and a strong track record of working with industry players, NTU has the experience and confidence to ensure research innovations nurtured at the lab can be developed into relevant applications that benefit the industry and society.”
Kicking things off, researchers will be working on 11 projects that are aimed at optimising land usage, future-proofing buildings and infrastructure, and transforming the way buildings are designed and constructed.
For example, researchers will develop a thermal management system and an indoor air quality system that is not only energy efficient, but also uses a botanical solution to purify the air. Integrating selected plants with architectural and interior design, indoor air pollutants would be reduced while creating a natural and lush indoor environment.
Another project involves a chilled ceiling technology that uses special composite materials for ceiling panels which are linked to a central monitoring system. The composite panels transfer heat more effectively than conventional aluminium panels, reducing the need for air-conditioning and improving energy efficiency.
On the digital front, researchers will look into creating technologies to scan and map the external and internal parts of building structures such as piping networks, to create Building Information Models. The solution aims to improve the efficiency of facility managers and change the way buildings are managed and maintained.
Next-generation solutions for industry
The multidisciplinary Lab will include NTU scientists from various fields and Surbana Jurong professionals. In its fully operational state, the lab will have 70 researchers, including NTU undergraduates and PhD students.
For a start, researchers will explore underground storage spaces for storing liquefied natural gas (LNG) in industrial and urban areas so that space aboveground can be freed up for other uses. The storage of LNG within these spaces will be kept at below 162 degrees Celsius to ensure it remains in a liquefied state.
Asia’s first ‘Cold Lab’ that will develop ‘Cold Energy Capture’ and ‘Cold Energy Storage’ technologies will also be set up. These technologies harness cold temperatures produced during regasification, a process where LNG is converted back to natural gas at atmospheric temperature. The harnessed cold energy could power various industrial applications such as cooling systems in warehouses and data centres.

Appointment of Master Building and Civil Consultants for Changi Airport Terminal 5
SINGAPORE, 13 April 2018 – Changi Airport Group (CAG) today announced the appointment of the Master Building Consultants, comprising three teams, that will provide architectural design and engineering consultancy services for the development of Changi Airport’s Terminal 5 (T5). It also announced the appointment of the Master Civil Consultants for the T5-related landside and airfield works.
Master Building Consultants
The firms that have been appointed are:
KPF (Singapore) Pte Ltd, in partnership with Heatherwick Studio and Architects 61 Private Limited, for the provision of architectural design services;
Arup Singapore Private Limited, Mott MacDonald Singapore Pte Limited, and Surbana Jurong Consultants Pte Ltd, for the provision of engineering services; and
DP Architects Pte Ltd, for the provision of design services for commercial spaces.
These firms will provide full consultancy services for the design of the Main Terminal Building, Satellite Terminal Building, Ground Transportation Centre and Primary Landside Roadway.
Master Civil Consultants
The Master Civil Consultants appointed are Arup Singapore Private Limited, Mott MacDonald Singapore Pte Limited, Surbana Jurong Consultants Pte Ltd and Changi Airport Planners and Engineers Pte Ltd.
These firms will provide consultancy services for the design of infrastructure at the landside and airside areas outside of the T5 buildings. These include taxiways, aircraft parking stands, roadways and drainage systems, as well as the connections for utilities such as power, water, gas, fuel and telecommunications to the T5 buildings.
T5 will cement Changi Airport’s position as a premier global air hub
Mr Yam Kum Weng, CAG’s Executive Vice President for Airport Development, said, “Today’s award of the contracts comes after months of in-depth discussions with each of the shortlisted firms. We thank all the firms for working closely with us on their proposals for this project and look forward to taking the development of T5 forward with our appointed consultants.
“With the aviation industry expected to experience strong growth in the coming decades and demand for capacity at Changi Airport projected to increase annually, the development of T5 as a single integrated terminal will ensure that Changi Airport remains competitive as a leading air hub capable of serving the growing needs of our airline partners and taking the travel experience of passengers to new levels.”
With the appointments of the Master Building and Civil Consultants, CAG will embark on the full design journey for the T5 project. The terminal is part of the larger Changi East development project that includes a three-runway system, as well as the development of cargo complexes and other supporting aviation and ground transport infrastructure. The project will provide Changi Airport with additional capacity of up to 50 million passenger movements per annum in its initial phase and 100 more aircraft stands.
The building on Corporation Drive is equipped with many of the security services that AETOS can offer to its clients.
AETOS, a member of the Surbana Jurong Group, has opened its first purpose-built complex, situated minutes down the AYE highway from its former headquarters in Jurong West, in the western part of Singapore.
The building was declared open in an official ceremony on 26 January, graced by Minister, Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Manpower and Home Affairs, Josephine Teo. The event was attended by over 200 guests, including government officials, clients and partners.
The indoor shooting range uses lighting and targetry controls to simulate different environments and situations during live firing training. Previously, AETOS had to rent training facilities at the Old Police Academy.
The seven-storey complex has several key facilities, including AETOS’ first shooting range – a 25-metre indoor range which was designed and built by SMM.
It also has a new Cash Processing Centre that provides a complete end-to-end chain of financial security services, boasting numerous physical security measures such as multiple interlocking access doors, custom-made transparent workstations and extensive 24/7 CCTV coverage.
The innovative safety and security technologies that AETOS offers to its clients have been incorporated into this complex, such as an Intelligent Fire Detection System, virtual fencing through video analytics, and automated security terminals for seamless access control.
Monitored from its in-house command centre, these features are part of the clustered building security service provided to its clients, integrating security, safety and facilities management to increase operational efficiency and reduce reliance on manpower.

Under the upcoming government-led Security Industry Transformation Map, key initiatives include the adoption of technology and the re-alignment of the regulatory environment in its support. In her opening address, Minister Teo noted that “the appropriate use of technology to carry out routine, labour-intensive tasks allows the security officer to focus on tasks that are more complex or require human judgement, such as incident response”.
To this end, AETOS is fully committed to the adoption of such technologies, leading the shift in the overall industry as it strives to meet changing security needs and manpower constraints.

Surbana Jurong’s Sustainability team has won two Merit awards at the inaugural Cities of Love Award (COLA). COLA is a Singapore movement that honours the sustainability efforts of individuals, businesses and communities.
The awards were given out to two Surbana Jurong projects under the environmental category: BCA SkyLab and National University of Singapore (NUS) School of Design and Environment Block 4. The BCA SkyLab project, which won Sustainability team leader Tan Szue Hann the Individual Award, was submitted as a design prototype for a state-of-the-art test laboratory for developing innovative, energy-efficient, sustainable building technologies. The COLA panel of judges, which included Tai Lee Siang, chairman of the World Green Building Council, recognised it for promoting innovation in sustainability.
The NUS School of Design and Environment Block 4 project, which won the team award, will be the first net zero-energy campus building in Singapore. The design of its architecture and engineering systems in the name of environmental sustainability caught the judges’ attention. Essentially, by providing a comfortable environment while consuming replaceable energy, it is slated to be a prototype of how hybrid cooling and renewable energy can become emblematic of future learning spaces in Singapore.

Singapore, 15 November 2017– Yale-NUS College and Surbana Jurong (SJ) signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today, with Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry Dr. Koh Poh Koon gracing the ceremony. Yale-NUS and SJ will collaborate in test-bedding the next generation of smart city solutions within the College campus. The two parties will use their respective resources and expertise to co-develop a digital masterplan for “Smart City in a Campus”, an initiative by Yale-NUS, in the following ways:
Knowledge sharing to co-create solutions – Yale-NUS students, staff and faculty members will share their feedback and experience on using SJ’s smart facilities management solutions, and explore the use of artificial intelligence in Yale-NUS’ upcoming mobile app, to allow users to conveniently submit feedback or report defects.
Test-bedding and refining technology innovations – SJ will deploy and test its smart city solutions such as a predictive lift monitoring system at the campus to enhance the residential living facilities and built environment of the College. Yale-NUS faculty and students will play an active role in improving and refining the prototypes alongside SJ via user testing and feedback and faculty expertise in collating and analysing data findings from the project. The College’s wide range of research expertise, which spans across the humanities, science and social sciences, will contribute to the unique solutions that can be developed as a result of this partnership.
Training of students – SJ and Yale-NUS will explore various collaboration channels (e.g. internships, job attachments and lectures) to educate Yale-NUS students and equip them with the relevant skills on smart city solutions.
These initiatives are aimed at enriching Yale-NUS’ unique residential living and learning model, which provides an ideal environment to test-bed SJ’s technology solutions. Currently housing more than 800 residents, the 64,000 square-metre Yale-NUS campus consists of three residential colleges (RCs), 1,000 student rooms, seminar rooms, laboratories, a library and a performance hall among other facilities. With students staying in suites of four to six people within three RCs, Yale-NUS is a microcosm of a small town, allowing SJ to test their solutions accurately in a real-life environment. The College’s close-knit community will also facilitate the collection of data and feedback that will enable SJ to improve their smart city solutions.
