Briefing to Mr S Iswaran, Minister for Communications and Information on Surbana Jurong’s partnership with AI Singapore and SMU to enhance predictive lift maintenance system.
Singapore, 30 August 2018 – Surbana Jurong, one of the largest Asia-based urban and infrastructure consulting firms, will partner AI Singapore and Singapore Management University (SMU), to further enhance its predictive lift maintenance system. This was announced at AI Singapore’s 100 Experiments Showcase event held today.
Surbana Jurong’s Lift Maintenance System (LMS) currently supports Town Councils in monitoring 25,000 lifts across 10,000 public housing blocks in Singapore. LMS collects data on the lifts’ performance and uses predictive analytics to identify potential issues before they occur and in turn, reduce lifts’ maintenance downtime.
The partnership aims to leverage advancements in Artificial Intelligence to enhance LMS’ predictive analytics capabilities. Surbana Jurong will provide data collected from its lift monitoring devices to the AI apprentices from AI Singapore for their analysis, under mentorship of SMU’s professors. SMU will also work closely with Surbana Jurong to conduct research and development to enhance its current LMS. This ensures that the developed solutions can be implemented quickly for immediate impact.
This partnership leverages Surbana Jurong’s experience of over 30 years in monitoring the lifts in Singapore’s public housing estates and the partners’ experience and capabilities in research and Artificial Intelligence. The project will be over an 18-month period.

Smart lift monitoring agreement is part of Singapore-Guangdong Collaboration Council’s five-year plan
Surbana Jurong’s Smart City Solutions team has signed an extension of a smart lift monitoring project with Guangzhou Academy of Special Equipment Inspection (GZSEI) at the 9th Singapore-Guangdong Collaboration Council meeting on 24 August 2018.
The partnership is part of the Council’s five-year plan to support the Chinese province’s Smart City initiatives and focus on areas such as intellectual property protection. In China, the total number of lift installations and maintenance market size is estimated to reach 5.9 million units and S$9.7 billion respectively by 2020.This partnership between Surbana Jurong and GZSEI will help technology transformation and product service application as well as promote the development and application of elevator IoT platforms in China.”
This agreement is an extension to Smart City Solutions’ first lift monitoring project in Guangzhou city, where the team currently monitors and analyses up to 600 lifts in private estates and government buildings. In the next phase, the team will deploy these smart city solutions to escalators and elevators in Guangzhou Railway Station, Haizhu District and Zhongxin Guangzhou Knowledge City.
Surbana Jurong partners Ping An Trust to develop Industrial New Township projects in China
At the same occasion, Surbana Jurong signed MOUs with Ping An Trust to collaborate on the development of Industrial New Township projects in China, beginning with the Shenzhen International Bio-Valley Industrial Park.
The 31.9-sq-km Park, located in Shenzhen’s Dapeng New District, is slated to be a leading bio-tech innovation centre and industry cluster. Ping An Trust, a major integrated finance conglomerate in China known for its technology-powered financial services and investments capabilities, is a subsidiary of Ping An Insurance (Group).
Ping An Trust commented that “Shenzhen International Bio-Valley is one of the top 10 innovation platforms of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Corridor, identified by the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government… Being able to leverage Surbana Jurong’s globally best-in-class planning vision and architectural design capabilities, Ping An Group could make an effort in the development of Shenzhen’s global competency in bio-technology industries”.

Surbana Jurong’s Managing Director of Smart City Solutions, Poon Joe Keen, was recently invited to speak at the 2018 RA-IRF Regional Conference for Asia and Australasia held at the International Convention Centre in Sydney.
The conference, held on 31 May and 1 June, was organised by Roads Australia, an industry association whose members include Australia’s road agencies, major contractors and consultants, service providers and other relevant industry groups.
It brought together nearly 300 industry leaders from across Australia, Asia and the Pacific, who reflected on the issues that will shape the future of infrastructure delivery and transport services.
In his speech titled “Reshaping our cities”, Joe Keen talked about the changing shape of cities and how it will affect infrastructure planning and delivery. He mentioned that by 2050, 6.4 billion people will live in urban areas, and such massive urbanisation will bring about challenges in terms of security, environment sustainability, asset maintenance and community engagement. Joe Keen added that the trinity of smart city technology, urban planning and city management will have to be part of any solution to address these challenges.

Singapore, 15 November 2017– Yale-NUS College and Surbana Jurong (SJ) signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today, with Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry Dr. Koh Poh Koon gracing the ceremony. Yale-NUS and SJ will collaborate in test-bedding the next generation of smart city solutions within the College campus. The two parties will use their respective resources and expertise to co-develop a digital masterplan for “Smart City in a Campus”, an initiative by Yale-NUS, in the following ways:
Knowledge sharing to co-create solutions – Yale-NUS students, staff and faculty members will share their feedback and experience on using SJ’s smart facilities management solutions, and explore the use of artificial intelligence in Yale-NUS’ upcoming mobile app, to allow users to conveniently submit feedback or report defects.
Test-bedding and refining technology innovations – SJ will deploy and test its smart city solutions such as a predictive lift monitoring system at the campus to enhance the residential living facilities and built environment of the College. Yale-NUS faculty and students will play an active role in improving and refining the prototypes alongside SJ via user testing and feedback and faculty expertise in collating and analysing data findings from the project. The College’s wide range of research expertise, which spans across the humanities, science and social sciences, will contribute to the unique solutions that can be developed as a result of this partnership.
Training of students – SJ and Yale-NUS will explore various collaboration channels (e.g. internships, job attachments and lectures) to educate Yale-NUS students and equip them with the relevant skills on smart city solutions.
These initiatives are aimed at enriching Yale-NUS’ unique residential living and learning model, which provides an ideal environment to test-bed SJ’s technology solutions. Currently housing more than 800 residents, the 64,000 square-metre Yale-NUS campus consists of three residential colleges (RCs), 1,000 student rooms, seminar rooms, laboratories, a library and a performance hall among other facilities. With students staying in suites of four to six people within three RCs, Yale-NUS is a microcosm of a small town, allowing SJ to test their solutions accurately in a real-life environment. The College’s close-knit community will also facilitate the collection of data and feedback that will enable SJ to improve their smart city solutions.

Singapore, 2 November 2017 – International Enterprise (IE) Singapore has successfully facilitated a partnership between Surbana Jurong (SJ) and two SMEs, iFocus Pte Ltd (a hardware company) and S3 Innovate Pte Ltd (a data visualisation company) to clinch their first lift monitoring project in Guangzhou city. This marks the two SMEs’ first overseas expansion. The project will comprise 100 sensors installed to monitor and analyse up to 600 lifts in private estates and government buildings in Guangzhou.
IE Singapore connected iFocus and S3 Innovate to SJ, enabling SJ to provide a comprehensive solution for lift monitoring. The project utilises SJ’s Smart City in a Box™[1], a platform integrating multiple smart city solutions. The platform enables customisable applications on a unified dashboard for officials and developers to monitor developments in a city through data collation and analysis for effective solutioning. SJ’s Smart City in a Box™ serves as the platform while iFocus and S3 Innovate provide hardware (sensors) for lift monitoring and user-friendly data visualisation respectively. In China, the total number of lift installation and maintenance market size is estimated to reach 5.9 million units and S$9.7 billion by 2020[2] SJ worked with IE Singapore on its overseas growth strategy for smart cities, starting in Guangzhou. Both identified SJ’s established in-house solution in lift monitoring, analytics and testing as the first product to launch, given its track record of monitoring 25,000 lifts across multiple brands in Singapore. iFocus and S3 Innovate while having a keen interest in overseas markets lacked track record and connections.

This project is envisioned to be spread over 1,000 acres across 4 distinct sites and is linked to the Karanja Port, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port (India’s largest cargo handling port) and the proposed Navi Mumbai Aerospace Park (India’s largest air freight terminal) with a dedicated elevated road link, making sure that the project gets the best connectivity to the rest of the world. Downstream opportunities include development of the concept, the detailed Masterplan, followed by Phase 0 and Phase 1 buildings, and infrastructure.
