Oasia Hotel Downtown in Singapore has been named the Best Tall Building Worldwide, standing tall next to past title winners such as Sydney’s One Central Park and Beijing’s CCTV Headquarters. KTP, a member of the Surbana Jurong Group was the civil & structural consultant for this project.

Awarded by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), the win comes after the building was selected as Best Tall Building Asia & Australasia at the Tall and Urban Innovation Conference held on 31 May in Chicago. CTBUH is a non-profit international body that recognises achievements in the advancement of tall buildings and the urban environment, and sustainability at the highest and broadest levels.

The 193.3m, 27-storey-high building was designed to be supported on a highly innovative and unique structural transfer system which enabled an intensified use of stacked spaces of offices, hotel and club rooms at different vertical strata. It also incorporates “skyspaces” uniquely designed with additional open-sided “ground” levels throughout.

In this geometrically challenging design, the team performed sophisticated and rigorous engineering analysis, ensuring the construction buildability and overall long-term behaviour were accounted for.

The Oasia Hotel Downtown Singapore won not only because it incorporated 60 stories of green walls along the exterior, but because of its significant commitment to communal space. The tower has also allocated over 40 per cent of its volume to open air communal terraces in the sky.

The realisation of this highly complex structural form is a testament to our unwavering commitment from our engineers who persistently pushed boundaries of innovation while firmly guided by first principles of structural engineering.

Robert Bird Group (RBG), a member of Surbana Jurong Group, had won the NCE 100 Companies of the Year award in the category of Excellence in Alternative Energy for its contribution on MeyGen Tidal Turbine project. RBG designed the Turbine Support Structures for the first stage of the planned 398MW MeyGen tidal turbine farm, the first project of its kind in the world.

The award category celebrates those companies that are doing the most to introduce better energy sources in their projects.

New Civil Engineer (NCE), a monthly UK magazine and organiser of the NCE 100 awards, cited how RBG’s entry on MeyGen Tidal Turbine project “provided a good case study in first principles design, including an explanation of how the project is pushing the boundaries of high turbulent current modelling and structural simulation. Learning from the scheme is being shared with the wider industry: learning from the project is being fed into a new design code which will apply as a new industry standard”.

RBG was also a finalist for NCE’s Construction Innovator Award.

Cities of Love Awards for two of Surbana Jurong’s sustainability projects

Double sustainability wins for Surbana Jurong at Cities of Love Awards; sustainability, renewable energy, environmental sustainability
Our winners flanked by COLA co-founder Valerie Ang (left) and World Green Building Council chairman Tan Lee Siang.

Surbana Jurong’s Sustainability team has won two Merit awards at the inaugural Cities of Love Award (COLA). COLA is a Singapore movement that honours the sustainability efforts of individuals, businesses and communities.

The awards were given out to two Surbana Jurong projects under the environmental category: BCA SkyLab and National University of Singapore (NUS) School of Design and Environment Block 4. The BCA SkyLab project, which won Sustainability team leader Tan Szue Hann the Individual Award, was submitted as a design prototype for a state-of-the-art test laboratory for developing innovative, energy-efficient, sustainable building technologies. The COLA panel of judges, which included Tai Lee Siang, chairman of the World Green Building Council, recognised it for promoting innovation in sustainability.

The NUS School of Design and Environment Block 4 project, which won the team award, will be the first net zero-energy campus building in Singapore. The design of its architecture and engineering systems in the name of environmental sustainability caught the judges’ attention. Essentially, by providing a comfortable environment while consuming replaceable energy, it is slated to be a prototype of how hybrid cooling and renewable energy can become emblematic of future learning spaces in Singapore.
